Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in the U.S.—and children are not exempt. Last year alone, 15,200 children and teens experienced SCA, highlighting the urgent need for preparedness in schools.
This is where Jennifer Ayala steps in. As Project Coordinator of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Program – Project ADAM, Jennifer has dedicated her career to creating Heart Safe Schools by equipping them with AEDs, training staff, and ensuring lifesaving preparedness.
Her impact is undeniable:
• Trained staff at all 300+ Miami-Dade County Public Schools, two dozen Broward County Public Schools, and is actively working on certifying Palm Beach County Public Schools.
• 17 Recreational Park Teams trained to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies.
• Since 2022, her training and preparedness efforts have saved four young lives—including a 9-year-old student in Hialeah who survived sudden cardiac arrest thanks to the swift action of trained school staff.
• Her ultimate goal: Every school in Florida certified as a Heart Safe School.
Jennifer’s work is powered by Project ADAM South Florida, a team from Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute committed to ensuring schools and youth organizations have the tools, training, and awareness needed to prevent cardiac tragedies.
Why This Matters
Sudden Cardiac Arrest strikes without warning, causing the heart to stop beating and blood flow to cease. Without immediate CPR and AED intervention, it is fatal within minutes. Jennifer’s work is the difference between life and death.
For her unwavering dedication, lifesaving efforts, and mission to make every school a Heart Safe School, Jennifer Ayala is a true local hero.
